Playing a sport outside of school whilst doing your best to stay on top your schoolwork can be a challenge. It can be difficult to know what to prioritise and how to reach your potential in all aspects of your life. Although there is no easy way to do it all, here are some tips that we think will help you to balance sport and academics:
1. Utilise resources
Do not be afraid to ask teachers for help if you are struggling with work. Lunchtime clinics are available for any subject, with teachers there who are willing to help. Do not try and do everything by yourself – there are so many resources (people, technology and so on!) here at Farnborough Hill to take advantage of.
2. Use your free time wisely and plan ahead
Plan ahead by using calendars so you have a visual reminder of when you have a busy evening or weekend. Set yourself realistic goals for the time that you do have to get the work done. This will allow you to prioritise things that are more important if you cannot manage to get everything completed. When travelling to various fixtures or even to school, use this time to review your notes or even get a homework done if you can.
3. Consolidate your knowledge as you learn it
Try not to leave work and revision to the last minute, instead try doing it little and often. By keeping up to date with notes and revising them often, this will make it easier for yourself when it comes to examinations. This should not take long and will benefit you in the future.
4. Factor in time to relax
Do not try and do too much. Give yourself time to unwind and relax without feeling pressurised or guilty. This will improve your performance in both school and sport. It is important to have time by yourself, whether it is reading a book, going for a walk, listening to music, or even just watching TV.
5. Enjoy your sport
Use sports training and games as a time to improve but also have fun with friends and get some exercise in - use it as an outlet. As much as it is important to perform well and improve, do not put too much pressure on yourself.
Ultimately, juggling sports and academics can be difficult, but it is extremely rewarding. If you prioritise your time wisely then you will be able to stay on top of your work whilst maintaining good performance in sport. Do not be hard on yourself, as although both school and sports are hard work, you can achieve great things if you put your mind to it.
