The Governors are delighted to announce the appointment of Mrs Maria Young as Head of Farnborough Hill with effect April 2024.
A graduate of the Universities of Durham and Cambridge where she studied Music, Maria has had a lengthy and successful career in education, including as Headmistress of Lincoln Minster School and St Mary’s School in Shaftesbury, and Deputy Head (Pastoral) at Worth School in Sussex. Maria joins us from Woldingham School where she is currently Director of Higher Education and Careers and a Sixth Form Housemistress.
“I am very pleased to welcome Maria to Farnborough Hill” said Gerry McCormack, Chair of Governors. ”As a committed Catholic, I know she will sustain the school's ethos and develop the strategic vision of the Board and leadership team for the benefit of the whole school community. With her experience of Headships and other senior roles in independent education, we know we have found the right person to take the school to the next stage of its development as a recognised champion of girls' education in the UK”. Maria is a committed advocate of all-girls’ schools, believing in the crucial role they play in empowering young women to flourish and develop the self-confidence to take creative risks in their learning and make a positive contribution to the school and wider world. She is also an accomplished musician – playing several instruments – and a conductor of choral and orchestral groups, as well as a keen walker and linguist.
“I am delighted and honoured to be joining Farnborough Hill as Head in 2024: I am a passionate supporter of all-girls’ education and leading a faith school is very important to me. From my first encounter with the pupils and staff, I felt the wholehearted warmth of this happy and inclusive community. I was impressed by the spirit of the pupils and by their eloquence as they spoke proudly about their school. I am very much looking forward to working with the whole Farnborough Hill community and, in particular, developing the role our alumnae play in supporting and inspiring our pupils, especially in the Sixth Form. I am keen to work with parents as well as with staff and pupils to ensure that the vision going forward is inspiring and effective. I will ensure that Farnborough Hill’s mission to educate each person to be the very best they can be is carried out with creativity, enthusiasm and with the continued commitment to excellence for which the school is known.”
We are looking forward to welcoming Maria to the Farnborough Hill community.
