On Monday, the JLT had our training day for the upcoming year: a fantastic leadership coaching session with Old Girl, Julie Watkinson (McCrum) (1984), who had been Deputy Head Girl during her time at Farnborough Hill.  Julie has had a wealth of experience regarding leadership and we were privileged to have her share her expertise with us.  During our session, we learnt about important characteristics that make a strong leader such as personalism, trust, integrity and empathy.  This was useful in giving us skills to aim for as we take on our leadership roles over the next year.

Another activity we did was thinking of a role model who we have looked up to in a leadership role and examples we listed included Malala, Mrs Bell and Dr Quinnell, our parents and the head of a firm one of us did work experience at.  We discussed the different reasons these people are our inspirations and reflected on how we adopt some of these admirable skills.

In advance of the training, we had been tasked with asking our friends and families to write down one word they would use to describe us, and not to show us what word they had put.  We then read out our words, which ranged from determined to hilarious, and reflected on how these made us feel and whether we had expected to be described in this way.  Overall it was a very useful and interesting day, and I know the skills I learnt will help me fulfil not only my role next year on JLT but in future leadership roles as well.
